In December, the South Carolina Interagency Council on Homelessness, in partnership with MACH and the Upstate Continuum of Care, will be hosting a training on Housing First. We are honored to have Sam Tsemberis. Sam Tsemberis is a clinical psychologist who is known as the “father of housing first.” He is the founder of Pathways to Housing a non-profit organization where he developed the Housing First model based on the belief that housing is a basic human right. Dr. Tsemberis is on the faculty at the Department of Psychiatry, at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He teaches, supervises and provides consultation and technical assistance to communities addressing homelessness. His research is in the areas of mental illness, addiction, and homelessness and he has published numerous articles, book chapters, two books: Housing First; A Program Manual by Hazelden Publishing and Housing First: Transforming Systems and Changing Lives by Oxford University Press. He has received numerous awards including in 2016, the American Psychological Association award for Distinguished Contribution to Independent Practice Award.
